Ongoing collection of stuff- ideas, quotes, little pictures I don't know what to do with, books I am reading, you know- all the random stuff that goes into being an artist.
During grad school we were given a collection of essays that the professor said would be helpful later down the line. He was right- I was looking through the essays recently and found one by Jackie on artist statements. I liked what she had to say so I checked out the book it came from. I am currently working through the book with a friend and both are really helping me get my butt in gear when it comes to moving my art practice to the next step.
I've been thinking a lot about this idea. I think this is how I go about making- I build, I put things together, I construct. Maybe this is why doing a straight drawing or painting doesn't feel complete to me? I have started a couple of new bodies of work where I am putting a lot of things together to construct the work- they feel finished, like I am full.
Holy shit I love this book. I checked out a digital version from my library over Thanksgiving break and it is incredible. He breaks down the underlying geometric structures of patterns in a way that makes even the most complex patterns manageable. I was planning on purchasing the book but a friend of mine beat me to the punch and bought it for me for Christmas!
I am getting ready to teach a pattern design class based on the William De Morgan show at the Delaware Art Museum. This book has tons of amazing images of his work and does a good job talking about his designs and the broader context of his work.
